We are headed to Gilbert, Arizona, for this case. Nicholas (Nick) Cordova was FaceTiming with his wife and two young children when two men rushed into his Gilbert HVAC business, riddled his body with bullets, and then fled the scene. Nick’s wife screamed into the phone, and then Nick’s business partner, David Michael Sweetman, picked up the phone and said Nick had been shot.
This took place on May 27, 2020, and Nick was just 40 years old at the time of his death. Gilbert Police made a quick arrest of Nick’s business partner, David Michael Sweetman, but he was soon released. No arrests have been made of the two assailants.
There are some peculiar things that surround this case. Nick’s wife discovered that the beneficiaries on Nick’s life insurance policy were changed from her and their children to Gilbert Air – the business. Nick’s wife fought Sweetman in litigation for years over the life insurance payout, but ultimately settled the case.
The other questionable thing that haunts this case is the questions lingering around the death of Sweetman’s wife, Laura. In December 2013, she was found deceased in her bathtub. The medical examiner reported her death as an accidental drowning, and Sweetman was at home when she passed away. Her loved ones dispute the ME’s findings. There’s a reason for that. In the spring of 2013 – the same year she died- Sweetman was arrested on DV charges against Laura. Laura recorded a conversation where David had threatened to take her life, and she reported this to Gilbert PD. Gilbert PD declined to press charges or further investigate. Laura ultimately filed for divorce, but died that same year. After Laura’s death, David gained custody of the kids and received a settlement from Laura’s life insurance policy.
No valuables were taken during the commission of the crime, so robbery was ruled out in Nick’s death. The insurance policy circumstances are questionable, but that alone is not going to lead to an arrest.
We already know the cause and manner of Nick’s death. In today’s reading, we will be looking specifically at motive and what evidence will crack this case. We will also see if there are clues as to who is ultimately responsible.
