Before the tragedy, the stunning mansion already had a dark reputation. Built in 1997, it was previously owned by pop superstar Britney Spears, who reportedly fled the property due to paranormal activity and unsettling energy. Britney Spears claimed she felt a dark force trying to push her down the stairs. She promptly left and sold the furnished house to Brittany Murphy.

Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack purchased the house in 2003, and over the years, the actress claimed the house was “sick” and that she didn’t want to live there. Just six years later, at the age of 32, Brittany collapsed and died in the home’s master bathroom. Five months later, her husband, Simon Monjack, died in the same manner and location. The medical examiner dismissed the possibility that their deaths were caused by black mold.

Simon’s mother said of her son’s imminent death, “All I know is that before Simon’s death, he was having hallucinations that things were crawling out of his skin.” Brittany Murphy’s mother shared that her daughter “absolutely hated the Rising Glen house. Every time we would drive up Sunset, Brit would say, ‘Please, can we stay at the Beverly Hills hotel?’ I’d say, ‘Honey, you’ve got to be realistic. We have our house, a 10,000-square-foot home. We’re going to stay in it.” Brittany also confided to Simon that she felt the house was “unlucky.” Following the tragic deaths, Brittany’s mom sold the house in 2011 at a loss.
